Day: 23.05.2018
Miles hiked today: 13.5 Miles Total Mileage: Mile 665 We slept in this morning. It's 50 miles to Kennedy Meadows and we only plan to hike between 10 to 15 miles today, so no rush. At around 10am we hit the street and hoped for a hitch back to the Walker Pass campground. On the town street we were not lucky so we changed to the highway where more cars were passing by. We climed over a fence and as soon as we were standing on the other side of the fence no cars would pass by but more cars passed by on the town street. What a bugger! However, a car pulled off and bookworm, another thru hiker, pulled down the window asked if we are fine to add some cash for the gas for the hitch back. Of course we are. So we climbed back over the fence and got in the car. The driver however was a little weird. His car was full of trash and I literally had to squeeze in the back, no room for my feet. He first had to get his recycles done and get some gas before he would drive us back. Now we are already in the car so we must take it. The recycling was back in town. There was a queue of 3 cars. Car by car they would recycle their trash, get a recipe for some cash back and some food. Our driver seemed to be very poor, so did the other people out here look like! Trashy place here. He also did get a cup with some meat and beans in it. Honestly it smelled yacky and I had to hold it for him! Next stop was the gas station and as Shell is too expensive we drove to another gas station further out in town. Bookworm whispered that she is really glad we are here in this car with here too while he was out :) finally, we hit the road in the right direction. But he was a veeery slow driver. While it took us about 30 minutes to town it took us 50 minutes back to the campground! But we made it and what an experience! And just I time. There was some trail magic going on on the camp ground. We got some cold sodas or beer with really jummy hot dogs and fruits. Of course we stayed and enjoyed! I can't remember when we finally hit the trail. It must have been around lunch time. It was not and no shade around. The first couple of miles was uphill again. Both Joanne and me were missing out on motivation. We are both very sad Kermit had to leave us and she is badly missed. However, I wish her the best of luck for her final master exams and hopefully we will see her back on trail! Just keep on walking fast Kermit!!! We were very slow this day. Because of a water source only the next day I carried 5 liters of water and a litre of cola (Joanne carried the jim beam :)). I had to take my backpack of every 2 miles to relax my back as my back hurted a lot. While drinking water the pack also gets lighter and I could hike on little longer than 2 miles. Finally, we still managed to get 13.5 miles in that day which is quite decent. As we are coming closer to the mountains and bear activity has been noted here we made sure to have all smelly products and food outside of our tents.
